Maurice Sporting Goods awarded the 2011 Anne Fawcett Corporate
Community Spirit Award.
Maurice Sporting Goods was awarded the 2011 Anne Fawcett Corporate Community
Spirit Award, which celebrates outstanding achievement in Volunteerism. The
ceremony was held on Saturday morning at their Annual Conference. David
Ciardullo and Mona Paolini attended the ceremony and were honored to receive
the award from Anne Fawcett herself. Anne Fawcett has been a dedicated
supporter of the YMCA for over 30 years and had some very kind words to say
about Maurice.
"I am very proud to announce that this year’s recipient of the Anne Fawcett
Corporate Community Spirit Award is Maurice Sporting Goods. Today, Carmine and
I are excited to have Mona Paolini and David Ciardullo from Maurice Sporting
Goods here to accept this award. The group from Maurice Sporting Goods came to
the YMCA looking for a day of community involvement for their staff. They
wanted to participate as one large group to support children in Peel Region, so
60 volunteers were placed at YMCA Camp Kelso. There they ran a camp day for the
children by setting up four stations: archery, fishing, a large group game and
a predator walk. They used their expertise in outdoor activities to educate and
have fun with the children. They planned the activities themselves and supplied
all the sporting equipment — which they generously donated to camp at the end
of the day. The children were thrilled at having something out of the ordinary
offered to them. The Maurice group has outstanding drive and enthusiasm for
their community and how they influence it, shutting down operations as part of
their annual “Maurice Cares Day.” They integrated an educational component to
their event, teaching the children the basics of archery, discussing the
different species of fish that can be found in Ontario’s waterways and wildlife
in local woodland areas. This group has gone above and beyond any level of
participation offered by our corporate volunteer groups and their enthusiasm is
infectious! They encourage their business partners to contribute, and their
transport partner shipped the equipment for the children free of charge. In
fact, when we visited the event, one of the Maurice team members was giving a
tour to a representative from another of their business partners — who was so
impressed he asked to participate next summer! The Maurice group’s leadership
and dedication are evident in every interaction they have had with the Y. They
don’t just show up to put their time into the one day; they make several site
visits, liaise with staff, pre-train their staff, and work out schedules and
logistics. They’ve made many children’s experience at YMCA Camp Kelso something
to remember, and we look forward to next year! Today, Carmine and I are excited
to have Mona Paolini from Maurice Sporting Goods here to accept this award.
Please welcome Monaand David." - Anne Fawcett
